Some bits and bobs worth mentioning

Me again :o)

Just a post to catch up with bits and bobs I am working on and things that might be of interest to some people. Firstly a couple of bits for the 2mm Scale Association...

1. Farish Conversions

 All the design work for a method of converting Farish engines to 2mm Finescale has been completed for the first engine (the Jinty). If everything goes to plan, these will be available to members at this years AGM where more information on the conversions will be available too.



  2. Farish Standard Class 4 Replacement Chassis

The design of the chassis is progressing slowly as the design of the original chassis is quite a bit different from the new style of chassis. I am currently getting my head around the valvegear to produce am etch to replace the original...


The last two are just some things worth mentioning but not connected with the Association...

3. Peckett Chassis

I am going to try something out with regards to the chassis and CNC mill something out instead of relying on an etched one.


It still needs lots of work, especially with the gearing as I can produce a gear ratio from 28:1 to 138:1 for this engine. The plan is to produce some sort of split solid chassis.

4. GWR Engine Shed

By request Osborns Models are working on a laser cut large GWR style engine shed and progress has been great.


I have a (cunning) plan for one of these and I cannot wait to get my hands on one.

  1. Excellent news on the Jinty Conversion. If they are available at the AGM I'll definitely be picking one up to try out!

      The aim is to make the conversion parts available at the AGM but sadly I cannot guarantee the parts will be there right now. It will be great to see you with a 2mm engine though.

      The engine shed does look good so far doesn't it. I am looking forward to doing something with one of those in the near future. I am sure they will be available to others at some point too.

  2. Not posting too much, you've always come up with something worth reading. And the great thing about blogs is setting your own rules.
    I'm pleased to see that the Peckett hasn't been forgotten.

Hi Julia I actually went to a 2mm meeting at Dartford the other Sunday and I was speaking to the chap that made the axle boxes (is that the right word) and he hag his jinty there I was mightily impressed what a great conversion I ordered a loco the next day it arrived on the Wednesday and it runs beautifully I'm just hoping that I can get one foe the kits I'm going to order another one .The chassis for the class 4 would interest me too .ive been chatting to Nigel Hunt quite a bit recently and have ordered a jubilee chassis kit from him as well .also no your not posting too much again it was chatting to you at St Alan's a few years ago that got me thinking 2mm

    1. Hi John.

      Things are certianly happening in the world of 2mm Finescale Modelling at the moment! The conversion for the jinty is the first in what will hopefully be a range of engines that can be easily converted to 2mmFS. The jinty itself has been tested be several people now and I am confident we have 'cracked' the conversion, several people have also managed to convert the engine in less than an hour. OK, so they arent quite drop in like the diesels but its the closest we have got to drop in wheels for steam engines yet. As I mentioned, more details will be at this years AGM.

  5. Hi Julia, wow you've been busy :-)

    From a selfish viewpoint I wish you'd change to 4mm so I could benefit from all your development work! But no chance of that, I'm sure :-)

    Anyway, I'm intrigued by your plans for that shed from Osborn Models. Does it have anything to do with Highclere? Can't see how, though!

    You could of course always try a bit of 2mm scale modelling too you know :oP There is no doubt in my mind that if you did the results would be simply stunning.

    I have always had in mind doing a little photo diorama thingy based around an engine shed so Osborns engine shed will be the ideal basis for one. Its nothing to do with Highclere, no!

    Always nice to see developments that could be available to the wider 2mm membership. Sometimes I wonder whether I ought to move my time period further into the 20th century to make use of some of them.
    PS Don't worry about posting too much, everything you post has some interest and is always inspirational!

      Thanks for the vote of confidence. I think you should stick with what you are doing as you are doing such a brilliant job at it. Just be mindful about potential more appropriate engines using the same chassis.

      I'm always on the look out for things that can make my modelling a little easier, but when it comes to RTR locomotives the manufacturers seem to shy away from tank engines with open cabs :-)

    3. Well if its any help the new Farish motor and drive is very compact. The Jinty doesnt have anything that cant be removed in the cab.
