Painting Pigeons

Hello again :o)

A while ago now when I was putting an order into Shapeways for some of my 3D printed parts I came across these...

As per normal I thought to myself "those look good, I am sure I can use them somewhere" and so promptly added them to my shopping cart.

Well, roll on a year (or two) and I thought while I was working on the goods shed for Highclere that the roof would look nice with something extra. After 'some time' wading through box after box of railway bits and bobs I found the little birdies and then made a start painting them. First the obligatory coat of Halfords finest primer...

They looks much better but then I thought I couldnt just stick some plain Grey birdies onto the layout so I got my paintbrushes out to add a little bit of colour to them (or some of them)...

This made them look much better and a bit more like the Pigeons I know. Some of these were then superglued onto the ridge tiles of the newly refreshed goods shed...

I am happy with that, the goods shed is now toned down a bit plus it now has some little birdies on the roof. The only thing now is how long they will actually last! They don't seem that bothered about the passing trains.

    1. Hi John.

Its scratch built from plasticard and laser engraved / cut bits and bobs.

  3. I was thinking of buying some of these the last time I was browsing the Shapeways site, but I couldn't find anything else that I wanted immediately to justify the postage,

Must go and have another look as we'll definitely need some for Lightcliffe - can't have a Yorkshire based layout without pigeons! Wonder if anybody does a 2mm scale whippet??

Do you think they could be painted up as other types of birds, Juila, or are they too much of a pigeon shape?

    Regards,

    David

    1. That is a really interesting question David.

Looking at them I think maybe some Chickens.

    2. Or doves maybe ... just been checking and they are the same species as pigeons. Give you an excuse for a dovecote as well.

    3. Doves, of course! Thats a great idea David. Im now thinking on how to make a dovecote and if I can have an excuse for one on the layout.

    4. Surely they'd have had one at the Abbey, Julia? ;)

  4. Don't forget to add some white streaks on the roof, below the pigeons :)

  5. Coooo!

Very nice Julia, I think it is the little things like this that really breathes life into a model. One of the Midland Area Group was going to make some cormorants in classic feather drying pose to sit on the groynes of St Ruth.

    1. I totally agree Ian although there is part of me thinking I really should be concentrating on more important things regarding the layout right now!

Yes, St Ruth NEEDS seagulls. Such an essential part of the coastline.

    3. Thats another good point David. The layout has alread got the nickname 'Downton Abbey' so I dont want to reinforce the stereotype!
